Coronado: Knight of Pueblos and Plains, first published in 1949, is Herbert E. Bolton’s classic, highly readable account of the Francisco Coronado expedition from Mexico into what is now the southwestern United States. Coronado, accompanied initially by some 300 Spanish soldiers plus many Native Americans, left Mexico City in 1540, and would travel through parts of Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas, before returning southward. Herbert Bolton (1870-1953) was a pre-eminent American historian, specializing in Spanish-American history and the borderlands region between the United States and Mexico. He was long-affiliated with the University of California – Berkeley, and for 22 years served as the head of the school's history department.
